Hawthorne House

The Hawthorne House was designed and built by architect Drew Hastings for his family. Working with a modest budget to design their forever home, the family kept the form simple in order to achieve custom details, like the wood screen staircase that frames the entryway and the one-foot-think building envelope that adds visual depth and enhances building performance. The form of the house is an archetypal gable shape--modern but referencing the 100-year-old neighborhood it inhabits. Because the lot is narrow and surrounded by tall trees, the house optimizes daylight by having a screened carport instead of a garage, and ribbon skylights above the stairwell and master bathroom. Relating to the forested context of Mr. Tabor, wood is celebrated throughout the house; on the exterior cladding and screen and the interior casework and cabinetry.
