Growing up in Portland, OR with a family of architects Drew had an early foundation for his love of design. As a kid, he was often taking household items apart to understand what was inside and how they worked. During the summer breaks from architecture school he worked as a carpenters assistant for a design-build contractor, Raphael Design, where he gained first-hand experience seeing what is inside buildings and how they work.
After receiving his Bachelor of Architecture from The University of Oregon’s School of Architecture and Allied Arts he moved with his wife Jessica to the Bay Area, where he worked at WRNS Studio in San Francisco. He was drawn to their leadership in sustainable design and approach to contemporary architecture, and quickly found himself working on design competitions and project teams for higher-education and commercial projects.
In 2013, he and his wife returned to Portland and he worked at Holst Architecture, where he was able to apply his experience with larger commercial projects to mixed-use housing. Also during this time, Drew was the recipient of the 2014 Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship, where his design competition entry and travel study proposal were the jury winner. This afforded him a 10-week trip through Europe to conduct his research project called Craftpoetic to investigate and begin to understand how projects find their poetic expression through the use of materials and methods and connection to location.
It was while house hunting for their starter home that Drew and Jessica were given the opportunity to design and build their first home. This spurred Drew to take a leap out of the larger commercial architecture world and into the more intimate realm of residential design and construction.
He re-joined Raphael Design as designer/project manager/carpenter which allowed him to oversee a variety of projects from small remodels to new construction custom homes. It was through this design-build experience that he really understood the journey of bringing a project from early conception through design, permitting, budgeting, scheduling, subcontractor coordination/management, to the execution a finished custom home.
While building his own home, he was not only the designer, but also the contractor and the client and had to wear all of those hats at once. The Hawthorne House was completed in 2018 and was selected to be part of the Portland Modern Homes Tour and the AIA Portland Homes Tour. Drew and Jessica now live there with their two sons, who are both curiously taking apart household items.
With a thorough understanding of the design and contraction processes, Drew wanted to design not only buildings, but also a business and culture, and founded Hastings Architecture at the beginning of 2020. At Hastings Architecture, work centers around clarity of concept and craft while serving our client’s needs.
